Aqualicious Night Meet Results

December 2010

Aqualicious Night Meet

Aqualicious held their first Night Meet in December. They did a really good job and we were very lucky to only have a few showers during the Meet. Their packs were creative and the bags were made in Mumbai, India, by poor people using their old newspapers.

To add to the occasion, our own Anne Gartshore swam in her first Masters Meet in 15 years and won her race! Welcome back to swimming and congratulations!

After this swim, Rod was due for surgery this week to repair damage to an old injury to his hand. We wish you a successful operation and a speedy recovery.

Nanango (South Burnett) Results

October 2010

The weather in Nanango was expected to be very cold, but when we arrived on Friday evening it was rather cool, but not as expected. In the restaurant that night, we were told that the day before had been -4”C. No thank you! However, the following morning, Alan was in T-shirt and shorts and with the swim venue indoors, it was a cosy environment all day. The five Redlands competitors all enjoyed themselves and some stayed for the Sunday breakfast and wine tour.

Overall results were:

Women

Swimmer Age Group Place
Roslyn Tolcher 35-39yrs Gold Medal
Sharon Devitt 35-39yrs Gold Medal
Sharon Dettmer 35-39yrs 4th - nearly in the medals Sharon!
Lorraine Bole-Brown 50-54yrs 9th

Men

Swimmer Age Group Place
Alan Patterson 60-64yrs Silver Medal

Alan (our coach) said after the meet, ”As I look at these results, I realise what our swimmers have been achieving over the past few years. Sharon Devitt has not been well recently and has returned to the pool to win gold. Roslyn started her swimming training somewhat recently and having taken the plunge into competition, is now in the medals….. and it has to be gold. Sharon Dettmer has persevered and with determination and commitment, has also taken the plunge to test her capabilities in competition. Even though Sharon has not swum all five races yet, that day is not too far off and her lower placings today, will become medals in the future. Lorraine has also shown determination against health problems related to her asthma and shows progressive improvements against her times. Once her fitness improves, the medals will be hers too. Swimming is not an easy sport and requires focus, practice, commitment and courage if one is to compete. All of our swimmers have this in them and I hope that the successes of these ladies will inspire others to challenge themselves in the competitive lanes in the years ahead. Competition brings out the best in our abilities and takes us beyond what we thought we were capable of achieving.”

Redlands Bayside runs a successful swim meet

September 2010

QRB swimmers and volunteers turned this into another successful event and the comments from our visiting swimmers was all praise for the well-run, friendly and efficient Meet. We were particularly pleased to have our Club Patron and Redland City Mayor, Melva Hobson, open the Meet and chat with several competitors. To everyone involved, our sincere thanks for everything you did. Well done and we hope that you found the occasion enjoyable and interesting, as well as experienced the fun and the camaraderie of Masters Swimming.

We had 12 swimmers who brought home the trophy for the large Clubs, against some strong competition. In consideration of the fact that we lost Rod Mackenzie’s participation on the day due to an injury, his entry still counted as a Redlands participant, so our remaining swimmers did a great job in scoring points to hold out Aqualicious with their 20 swimmers by our 39.5 points average to their 37.4. Adding even more excitement to the win, was having three virgin swimmers in Heather Lever (2 events), Vivien Carlsson (two events) and Paul Nichols. Congratulations to Janelle Taylor on her 2nd Place! Even without some of us not swimming the full five events each, Redlands still rose above the competition and walked away with another award for our trophy cabinet.

1 Redlands Bayside 474 12 39.5
2 Aqualicious Masters 747 20 37.4
3 Miami Masters 335 9 37.2

Individual Results

Both Alan and Simon are really pleased at the progress being made by our newer swimmers and their decisions to enter this Meet. This is a big step up and we wish Heather, Vivien, Sharon Dettmer and Paul, every success in their future Swim Meets. With some increase in confidence in the months ahead, we would not be surprised to see these new competitors building up to 5 events and placing in the medals. Heather had a PB of 41s in the 50m Freestyle and Sharon cut her times in her first Long Course event, with Paul doing a great job in his races.

Annual Swim Meet is getting close!

July 2010

Redlands Bayside Masters Annual 2010 Swim Meet is getting closer. Two year ago the club hosted our first Meet and a wounderfull time was had by all. We had a full program and had the pleasure of catching up with a number of swimmers from our SE Queensland Masters Clubs at the BBQ afterwards.

The invitations have gone out and we hope to meet up with everyone who joined us in our last meet and hopefully a lot of new faces.

Details of the Meet can be found here and entries close on 10th September 2010.

Anyone Can Swim!

Many people believe that you have to be a very good swimmer to attend swim meets and be a member of a swimming club.

Many also believe that if you are a member of a swimming club that you must swim at swim meets!

Nothing could be further from the truth with Redlands Bayside Masters and other Masters Swimming Clubs. At Redlands Bayside Masters we have people from their late teens through to their eighties swimming with our Club. Some swim to compete in the various Queensland Club Swim meets, others swim to keep fit and some are just starting to learn to swim again.

Our coaches Alan Patterson and Simon Bole-Brown have surprised many new swimmers when they find that once they understand the simple correct techniques they can convert one difficult lap of the 25m or 50m pool into many enjoyable laps. Transformations in swimming style and ability have been known to occur in as little as one night!

If you are afraid that you are not good enough or that you might make a fool of yourself - put it out of you mind, come down and join us for one session and we are sure that you will join us for many more sessions.

Vorgee Million Metre Awards

Our Club supports the Vorgee Million Metres Awards, which provides all of our Members with a Masters Swimming Australia Logbook, to record all their swims.

Registered Members of any Masters Club are eligible to enter and the program is to encourage fitness and well-being in all of us.  One simply records the metres swum on every occasion - training, competitions, open water, social swims or aerobic swims.

As the Chinese proverb says,

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.”

Awards

Established in 2001 and sponsored by Vorgee, the Vorgee Award has several categories:

1 million    - a polo shirt and certificate
2 million    - a polo shirt and certificate
3 million    - a polar fleece, engraved plaque and a certificate
5 million    - a polo shirt, engraved plaque, certificate and Vorgee gift pack
7 million    - a polar fleece vest, engraved plaque, certificate and Vorgee gift pack
10 million    - a taslon jacket, engraved plaque, certificate and Vorgee gift pack

All garments are embroidered with the Masters Swimming Australia logo, Vorgee logo, the words of the award, “One Million Metre Club” and your name.

Once you have achieved your goal of ‘X’ Million Metres, advise your President, who will contact our Branch for an application form.  Once the swimming details have been verified, the National Office will process the Award and send it to Branch for presentation.

Don’t have a Record Card yet!

Not good enough.

We can’t have you missing out, so contact the Club President, who will get one to you pronto.

Let’s all get into the swim.

And………………..which Member will be first to qualify for One Million Metres? Return to Top
